CTzen Stories: Peter Wilkniss on Building a Career By Doing What You Love

Everyone has a story waiting to be heard. We’re highlighting some of the amazing stories from within CleverTap — from our very own CTzen’s — because we believe in the amazing people we work with everyday and want to share the exciting work culture that we’ve built together. Presenting: the CTzen’s of CleverTap.

Peter Wilkniss: In His Own Words

I studied Economics at the University of Virginia and pursued Business/Law graduate degrees at Columbia University. Thinking back to those pursuits and now, to my current role leading and managing a team of 100+ engineers, it’s been an enriching experience. My entire journey has been a rollercoaster ride encompassing determined focus and hard work, accompanied by a strong belief in what I envisioned as my future.
Early on, I was never inclined toward the creative arts, although somewhere inside, I loved the idea of creating things on a digital platform. The idea of having my code run on billions of devices was enticing. The more I researched this potential pursuit, the more excited I became. But apart from a few computing courses in college, I had absolutely no formal training in software development. So I decided to learn from scratch and began spending late nights and weekends studying and writing code, experimenting, making mistakes, and learning from them.

Gaining Experience

In 2005, I joined a restaurant technology company called uWink/Tapcode where I gained much greater exposure to the ins and outs of high tech. Then, in 2010, I became CTO of  HandMade Mobile/Doppelgames. In this role, I led a full-stack team in building scalable, cloud-based platforms supporting multiple web/iOS/Android social networking apps for celebrities. This role solidified for me that I was on the right path, pursuing my passion.
Then in 2015, I joined Clevertap, where initially, I began working on the iOS SDK and built several of them. After some time, I took over all the SDKs with a small team which eventually became a much larger team. I also took responsibility for the platform’s frontend, and today  I’m also responsible for all of Product Engineering, composed of more than 12 teams (and over a hundred engineers) working on various aspects of the product.

Achieving Goals, Doing Work You Love

My career trajectory is a testament to how you can achieve nearly anything if you are enthusiastic and persistent in working toward your goals. Skills can be acquired if you’re prepared to put in the work and tackle the learning curve no matter how steep it may be. To quote Steve Jobs, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
