While kids my age followed a typical routine of studying, going to college, and taking a job, I aspired to a different life and charted a path for achieving it. I never doubted my abilities, and for me, starting my own business was a way of expressing myself. My role model was my mother. She is a strong woman who always wanted me to explore my talents and abilities and encouraged me in every way possible.
It all started when I came across a friend who organized events. I was drawn by the work involved and their success. So, I started my own event company back in Italy at sixteen. We organized small and big events and, with all the dedication and hard work, I began earning more than my parents. I generated enough money to invest in a new business. I was always eager to learn new things and explore different ventures. So, at the age of 18, I handed over the event business and opened a cocktail bar. I also scaled that business and truly enjoyed the financial freedom I achieved from it.
I then quit my business and decided to study law for six years in Spain and Portugal, where I primarily focused on my language skills. However, it was apparent that I ultimately wanted to explore the world. So I visited the UK in 2011 with my then-partner, which was a turning-point in my life. I had decided that this was where I wanted to be. I loved the country and its opportunities and could picture creating a life here.
After finishing my law degree, I moved to the UK. I didn’t pursue jobs in law. Instead, I spent the first nine months simply exploring the city and taking in the culture. I wasn’t very proficient in English and took a job at a restaurant cleaning cutlery. My friends and relatives back in Italy often teased me and wondered why I would be doing this when I could run a successful law practice back in Italy. But I was focused on my goal and was not going to be deterred. After working and discovering the city better and making friends and new connections, I then pursued a job in sales.
My first stint in sales was selling electricity door-to-door. I was successful in this, which was a confidence booster. I realized I could do really well in sales. While exploring new sectors, I was drawn to technology and finance, which were booming sectors to explore. I applied to various companies in both industries and coincidentally got a job in both sectors at the same time. I chose tech over finance, because I firmly believe technology has a direct and consequential impact globally. Also, it allowed me to explore my creative side.
I am a creative person, and many people asked me why I never pursued art. My viewpoint here is very different. Of course, I follow art and believe that a person can explore multiple interests. Society often tries to teach you to adopt a specific pattern, but human beings are complex individuals and can challenge any limit if they put their heart into it. The level of commitment to each exploration differs. My mantra of success has always been my ability to handle rejection. Every rejection and challenge that has come my way has only propelled me to excel further.
At CleverTap, I was amazed by the opportunities that came my way, and in every assignment, I discovered new creative outlets through technology. The impact of developing technology is ever-changing and on a global level. Every project is like building a new art masterpiece, and the journey is thrilling and enriching. I truly believe, “If you are focused on your vision, you can achieve anything you want.” I was able to do so and shall continue my endeavour.
