CTzen Stories Dharmendra Rana Intelligence is the ability to change

Everyone has a story waiting to be heard. We’re highlighting some of the amazing stories from within CleverTap — from our very own CTzens — because we believe in the amazing people we work with everyday and want to share the exciting work culture that we’ve built together. Presenting: the CTzens of CleverTap.
I have always excelled at academics and have been a top-ranked student throughout my school days. We were taken to science exhibition centers which inspired us to study Aeronautical Engineering. Unfortunately, my father refused to invest the amount required for this endeavor. I then decided to study Business as an alternative so that it can help me continue handling my father’s business. My friend’s father then urged me to become a Chartered Accountant. It was a haphazard decision back then, but looking back at my journey, I think it worked well for me. I have always been very business minded and believe in making decisions that have a great return on investment.

Roadblocks and Determination

I was so confident with my academic records until my decision to pursue becoming a Chartered Accountant. In 2013, I first attempted my CA exam and failed miserably. It shook my confidence. In my second attempt, I was ill with typhoid and couldn’t clear even the next three attempts. Then during my fifth attempt, my father got a sudden stroke that resulted in paralysis. I had to handle the family business along with studying for the exams. After another three attempts, I finally cleared my CA after four years.
The four years were like an unexpected struggle for me. My father is a businessman and my mother is a tuition teacher, and they have always been my idols. Their support helped me through this difficult period.
I then joined two startups, Fintech and Edtech. In the second, I worked in education technology, but lost my job due to downsizing on account of COVID outbreak. Back then, I had taken a housing loan which loomed over me. I was confident and kept giving interviews relentlessly. I gave around 80 interviews before I eventually got a job with CleverTap.

Exploring Opportunities

The process of interviews was overwhelming. I was qualified but I attempted all interviews, irrespective of the category since I didn’t want to depend on or ask for financial assistance from my parents. Those two months that I kept looking for a job were extremely stressful for me but I kept going, knowing I have a family to feed and look after. I was willing to take any job, large or small. My spouse and my daughter were there throughout and stood by me.
Although the layoff came as a shock, it also let me explore plenty of new avenues. I implemented a fixed routine during COVID, maintained a rhythm and spent the evenings taking coursework to learn new skills.
After a few weeks of job-hunting, I got a call referring me to CleverTap. I had an interview but was asked to wait. After three weeks, I got a call saying I was shortlisted and gave another few interviews before I was offered the job. I had three offers then, but I chose CleverTap because I believed the ideology of the company matched with my first startup which was an amazing experience for me.

Inspired by the Culture and Principles

At CleverTap, the work culture has been inspiring. The people here have been fantastic. The relationship between the seniors and juniors is amazing. They set an amazing example, and I firmly believe I need to carry the legacy of culture and behavior forward. The company principles at CleverTap work seamlessly with my personality.
The company has taught me to always take ownership of your work and decisions. Whenever a decision is taken, stand by it. I use this principle in my real life as well. The future seems amazing, and my intention is always to excel in whatever I do. I would like to finish my story summing it up with a quote, “Be willing to change because life won’t stay the same.”
