Our very own Poppin Mathias, Vice President of Talent Acquisition, inspires us to follow our dreams, no matter what the circumstances, through her own words.
Growing up, both my parents worked really hard to give our family a “good life” with all the things that we all yearn for. Both my parents are instructors and they ran a typing center. I started learning the ropes: learning to type 100 wpm and learning stenography during my school days. At that time I also had a job typing CVs for people who used to come to my dad’s typing center to work on their resumes so they could apply for jobs. Although I was young, I began to understand recruitment and how the job market worked. I was intrigued and curious to learn more about it.
Eventually, it was time for me to graduate and make a decision about my career. I knew I wanted to establish myself as a talent acquisition professional, to make a difference in people’s lives. And over the course of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to place people in jobs around the world.
My life and career have taken me places and given me ample opportunities to explore, learn and grow. Outside of work, I’m a travel enthusiast: I love to drive and have explored parts of Southern India and Maharashtra on road trips.
I’m also a devoted yoga practitioner, and this discipline has helped me to understand myself better. I’ve become more patient with myself and others and have learned to put my life into perspective. Each day I practice yoga to build more confidence, happiness, and security within myself — to take things into my own hands and create a better life for myself.
There is no typical workday for a recruiter because every day is a new challenge. Finding the perfect talent from within the talent pool is definitely like finding a needle in a haystack. There are days of hardcore research, trying to find candidates through databases, connections, and social media, and sourcing and screening those to gauge if they are suitable for the role. But of course, there’s always the possibility that the hiring manager may not like the candidate, or a candidate changes their mind, and so the cycle goes on.
There are many different perceptions of a recruiter’s role, and some are certainly amusing. However, through all the jokes, the truth that rings clear is that the job of a recruiter is filled with unexpected events, and their success lies in adapting to circumstances.
My job is certainly demanding, but the rewards are significantly satisfying and rewarding.
CleverTap has been an extremely enriching and fulfilling experience for me. I have had the opportunity to build teams from scratch, collaborate and hire folks across different geographies.
I believe it’s the people who build the company culture, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work for a company that believes in the power of people and helps them grow.
Happy employees = high productivity. We truly believe in making each day count and supporting each other’s success. In the end, as Abraham Lincoln said, “it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.”
It’s okay to fail, but one should always continue to go after their dreams. No matter what people say, whatever criticism you face or advice you get — NEVER GIVE UP. To sum it up, “If you fall behind, run faster, never give up, never surrender, and rise up against the odds.”
