Location-Based Services

July 9, 2018

Location-based services (LBS) are specific software applications created to leverage users’ real-time geographic location so you can market to them.

With users’ smart devices relaying location to you (the mobile marketer), the LBS can then send users timely and relevant content based on their location. Some examples of content they can receive include:

  • News and updates at your location
  • Nearby entertainment and restaurants
  • Promotional coupons for stores in your vicinity

5 Elements Needed for Apps with Location-Based Services

To use location-based services, you will need five elements in order to effectively market to your users:

  1. Your app
  2. The user’s mobile device
  3. A GPS component that is able to pinpoint the mobile device’s location
  4. A mobile network, that carries data and requests from mobile device to your content provider and vice versa
  5. A content provider that serves up the geo-specific content to the user
