App Store

July 6, 2018

The App Store – also known as an app marketplace – is a virtual distribution platform where users can browse, purchase, and download apps of their choice according to their needs and the operating system they use on their mobile devices.

App Store Categories

There are different app stores for each operating system. The three main ones for mobile devices are the Apple App Store for all Mac and iOS devices, Google Play for all Android devices, and the Amazon App Store for all of Amazon’s devices.

There is also the Microsoft Store for all Windows devices and computers. And the Chrome Web Store for machines running Chrome OS.

Plus, there are various other marketplaces for apps that don’t fall under those top three categories: F-droid for free & open source software (FOSS) on Android devices, Steam for gaming, and much, much more.

The Main Challenge of the App Store

With the proliferation of millions of apps in every marketplace, it’s easy to be overlooked. The trick is to be found among the many options and discovered by the crowd. You have to stand out, you have to have great reviews, and you have to be easy to find. This is where App Store Optimization (ASO) comes in.
