I had a fantastic childhood, and my father has always been a major influence on me. Some of his teachings were impressed upon me early on, and I follow them to this day. I was born in Nagaland, and my father worked as a Civil Engineer there. As a child, I was intrigued by his work and often accompanied my father on the construction sites.
One year, when I was studying in the standard fifth, I accompanied my father to one of his construction sites. There was a labor strike happening, and the work at the site had come to a complete halt. After talking to the workers for a while, my father began mixing the concrete himself without saying a word. Soon the others saw him doing the same and began joining him, and the strike was eventually called off. Later, I asked my father, “Why did you begin working?” And his words have remained with me to date. He said, “Son, if you want to get the work done, you should do it yourself.”
I genuinely believe that there is nothing more important than hard work. I would love to share a story of when I really took this lesson to heart. I had just begun my career. We had a friend in our colony who was from an affluent family. Those days, when we had just started earning, he was the one who used to always take us out. He was the only one who had a car back then, and I have some beautiful memories. Each one of us was a bit amazed by this friend of ours.
Then his father passed away, and the family suffered a massive loss financially. My friend lost everything he had. His family was bankrupt. But he didn’t give up. He started driving a taxi. I always remember seeing my friend fight back. Not once was he ready to succumb to his new, much-diminished circumstances.
A few years down the line, he came to own a fleet of taxis. The journey reminds me of a phoenix rising from ashes. His journey taught me another lesson I have never forgotten. Never take anything for granted, and no matter what, hard work sees you through.
At CleverTap, my journey has been beautiful. The values here are the same that I have grown up believing in. I still remember my first day at the CleverTap office. I was sitting in the reception area, waiting for the formalities to be taken care of. Then I noticed the admin head offering chai/coffee himself and checking on people. I saw him again at lunchtime, gently reminding everyone to take a break and get some food. It struck a chord in me then, and it continues to do so.
I have worked in more prominent companies before, and I know how savage it can be out there. The open-door policy only exists in the manuals, but the culture at CleverTap is simply amazing, and because I work in a customer-facing role, I value and genuinely appreciate this.
I live in Navi Mumbai and therefore start early every day and reach home only late at night, so I know I am not doing a very good job at maintaining work/life balance, but my family is very supportive as they understand how much my work means to me. Nonetheless, I have promised myself to work on achieving greater balance this year. We live in a fast-paced world, and the pandemic has also taught us the significance of slowing down and savoring certain moments.
In closing, I want to leave a little message to those people who are just beginning their careers, “A strong work ethic is important because, unlike intelligence, athleticism, charisma or any other natural attribute, it’s a CHOICE.” I encourage you to always remember that.
