The BookMyShow Story

Founded in Mumbai in 1999 and launched in 2007, BookMyShow is the leader in the online entertainment ticketing space, with over 50 million app downloads. The company has expanded its presence to over 650 towns and cities in India and sells over 10 million tickets a month across categories including movies, sports, events, plays and concerts.

With over 75% of transactions being driven through mobile, it was only fitting that BookMyShow decided to create a robust mobile marketing strategy to engage with its users.

It was important to work with an analytics and engagement platform that could efectively handle the increasing scale of BookMyShow’s marketing campaigns while providing a personalized app experience for each of its users.

With multiple entertainment options for its users, the marketing team is tasked with effectively promoting them to the right audience. Extensive user data was needed to increase engagement and ultimately drive more ticket sales.

This is where the BookMyShow team wanted a marketing solution that would give them access to real-time insights into user behaviour throughout the user journey, from onboarding to retention.

Solution

With CleverTap, BookMyShow is able to access real-time user data. They can easily segment users who like a particular movie genre or event type and engage them with targeted campaigns.

Live User Segments

BookMyShow can now define key user attributes – like users who watched a specific film trailer, or who previously purchased tickets to a comedy show – and CleverTap will add users to that segment as soon as they meet the criteria. BookMyShow can easily target specific segments of users with personalized messages, all in real time.

Pivots

BookMyShow uses Pivots to find out when users are most active on the app. The team had been sending push notifications between 3-6 PM, but saw low engagement rates. By pivoting on events like ‘App Launched’ or ‘Trailer Watched,’ the team now knows that most of their users are active between 12- 4 PM -improving CTRs by 5x.

Personalized & Triggered Messaging

BookMyShow now tailors notifications to suit user interest based on their activity and user behaviour. Marketing holiday blockbusters is much easier now that the team has visibility user behavior which users like certain types of movies, and they’re seeing a 2x increase in engagement.
