Not Equals Operator includes “Not Set”

December 15, 2016

In CleverTap you can set a User Property on any profile to identify users with certain characteristics. For example you might create a User Property (Customer Type) and set its value for a given user to “Silver” if she has made sufficient purchases. Read more about User Profiles and User Properties in our Documentation.

Historically, the Not Equals operator would only return users where the User Property value was set (in the below example it would only return users with values Bronze, Gold and Platinum). Unfortunately this left out all the users who did not have the User Property set at all.

We’ve fixed this! Now the query below returns all users where Customer Type Does Not Equal “Silver” OR Is Not Set (i.e the Customer Type does not exist at all for that profile).
